About The Event

This is an issue that impacts everyone – not just teens – but their parents, teachers, friends and communities as well. Together, we can raise the community's awareness about teen dating violence and promote safe, healthy relationships.

this  novel shares the unforgettable story of a young woman as she struggles to find strength in the aftermath of an assault.

Told in four parts—freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior year—this provocative debut reveals the deep cuts of trauma. But it also demonstrates one young woman’s strength as she navigates the disappointment and unbearable pains of adolescence, of first love and first heartbreak, of friendships broken and rebuilt, and while learning to embrace a power of survival she never knew she had hidden within her heart.

The Delaware County District Library, Delaware City Schools, HelpLine, and United Way of Delaware County, all who are a part of the Delaware County Against Human Trafficking Coalition, are bringing awareness to Teen Dating Violence Month (February) by hosting a book discussion of the novel The Way I Used to Be with author Amber Smith who has happily agreed to attend!!!

We are also grateful to have Nora Flanagan, HelpLine’s SARN (Sexual Assault Response Network) Coordinator to provide supportive information and resources for those who are sexual assault survivors or know someone who is.
